ONE MAN'S NOSTALGIA MAY BE ANOTHER MAN'S.... by Dave Goode

The other night I had this really strange dream involving Bill Ward and Russ Meyer, the Titans of TIT-illation. I had discovered comic book artist/illustrator Ward about age twelve when a buddy gave me a copy of Cartoon Parade, a magazine that was published by Martin Goodman the same guy that published Marvel Comics. The mag was a collection of pin-up pics (no nudity) of actresses, models and burlesque queens. Plus risque cartoons by the likes of Dan De Carlo, Bill Wenzel, and Bill Ward. I always found Ward's glamour girl illustrations to be more titillating than the pin-up photos. I discovered Russ Meyer about a year later when I traded three comic books for a copy of Playboy that featured a pictorial on the Meyer directed movie BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1970).

The dream involved my working on a project with Meyer and Ward. A movie version of the Captain Bondage comic book. What? You never heard of Captain Bondage? You're not alone. Back in the 1980s I met Bill Ward and worked with him on a couple of strips featuring burlesque queens Stella Starlet and Sugar Caine for Weird Smut comics published by John A. Mozzer. Captain Bondage was another character created by myself and illustrated by Ward. The burlesque of comic book superheroes made it's only appearance in Screw magazine published by Al Goldstein. In any case in my dream the movie starred three of my favorite Russ Meyer's stars Alaina Capri, Lorna Maitland, and Tura Satana. The flick also featured ape - suit actor George Barrows. Indeed the "stuff that dreams are made of". Below there's a new cartoon by Vance Capley and myself featuring our retro burlesque cartoon creation Miss Ginger Snaps.

BURLESQUE COMICS by Dave Goode

I've mentioned in the past that I've been a fan of old-time burlesque and striptease since I saw the movie GYPSY as a preteen back in the 1960s. In my early twenties I started collecting mags like CABARET and MODERN MAN that featured articles and pictorials on burlesque and nightclub performers. It was also about this time that I started collecting SHERRY THE SHOWGIRL and SHOWGIRLS comics from Atlas Comics in the 1950s. As most comic book fans know Atlas was the name of the company that would become Marvel Comics in the 60s. I'm sure that the target audience for these Atom Age comics were adolescent boys. I mean the stories were just flimsy excuses to draw the female characters in cheesecake poses by legendary comic book artist Dan De Carlo.De Carlo was best known for his work at Archie Comics in the 1960s. 

 

And just how many comics were there out there in the 50s had a lead character who was a cabaret performer / showgirl ? Hmm. Just what was Torchy's occupation ?

A little while back my buddy Vance Capley and I introduced a character Miss Ginger Snaps. We put her in a strip with a character we called Pharaoh Love, a black bodybuilder. We then put her in two one - pagers of her own. We then decided to build a comic around her. Below is the first page of that comic. Give us some feedback on what you think. Burly Q Comics by Dave Goode

 
I have been a fan of old-time burlesque and striptease since the first time I saw the movie GYPSY as a preteen. Starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood (in the title role) this was the movie adaptation of the Broadway play based on the autobiography of legendary striptease artiste' Gypsy Rose Lee. Only the last third of the movie dealt with Gypsy's life as a burlesque queen. But it left a lasting impression on me. Burlesque like pro wrestling came across to me as something both glamorous and seedy.








Pro wrestling always seemed like a burlesque of big time sport. Boxing specifically , though the analogy pro wrestling is to amateur wrestling as striptease is to ballet works too. Pro wrestling had Ricki Starr and Gorilla Monsoon.While burlesque had Candy Barr and Tempest Storm. Back in the 80s I did some work for John Mozzer's underground comic WEIRD SMUT. I created two (forgive the joke) "strips" for the first two issues starring ecdysiast, Stella Starlett and Sugar Caine. Both features were illustrated by pin-up cartoonist supreme Bill Ward.

I had been introduced to Ward's art back in the 60s in the pages of mags like HUMORAMA. These were magazines that featured recycled burlesque jokes , pin-up pictures of Hollywood starlets and strippers in lingerie and swim-wear and pin-up cartoons by Ward and others , like Dan De Carlo. I absolutely loved Ward's work. I think I enjoyed his cartoons even more than the " girlie photos ". But it was funny looking at De Carlo's pin-up cartoons with strippers and bathing beauties that looked like Betty , Veronica and Midge a couple of years after a graduation from Riverdale High School.
