BETTIE, THE JUNGLE PRINCESS by Dave Goode

Do you remember certain DC Comics of the Silver Age where the editors, writers, and artists would come up with a cover image and then create a story built around it? The adage you cant judge a book by it's cover was often true when applied to these comics. I got the distinct impression this was also the case for the 10 page lead story found in Bettie Page Comics No.1 from Dark Horse in 1996. You start with the cover illustration by the late, great Dave Stevens that itself looks like a homage to Frank Frazetta's cover to Thun'Da No.1 from the 1950s.

With a script by Jeff Gelb and Dave Steven the story is penciled by Bret Blevins with inks by Blevins, Mike Manley, and Dave Stevens. The story itself is a hilarious tribute to B-Movie jungle adventures. And features thinly disguised cyphers for Ed Wood Jr. and Johnny Weissmuller.

The whole thing was most likely inspired by a photo shoot with pin-up model turned pin - up photographer Bunny Yeager and model Bettie Page done at the Africa U.S.A theme park in Boca Raton, Florida in 1954. The sexy "jungle girl" outfit Bettie is wearing was in fact made by Miss Page herself.

I like to believe there is an alternate universe where a B-Movie producer like a Sam Katzman decided to make a jungle adventure flick starring Bettie Page. Maybe even co-starring Johnny Weissmuller. As Johnny Weissmuller and not Jungle Jim. And Steve Calvert as Bettie's faithful gorilla companion. Something that was missing from the photo shoot with Miss Yeager.

And don't forget the comic!

Monogram Double Feature by Dave Goode

To most fans of cinema psychotronica the movies that Bela Lugosi starred in at Monogram during the 1940s for producer Sam Katzman are referred to as the Katzman 9. They were previously referred to as the Monogram 9 until someone pointed out that Lugosi made The Mysterious Mr.Wong for Monogram in 1934. And that mystery flick in which Bela plays a Fu Manchu type criminal mastermind wasn't produced by Katzman. Of the Katzman 9 two of my favorites were the East Side Kids comedies Spooks Run Wild (1941) and Ghosts On The Loose (1943). Both featuring Lugosi.

If you ever wondered what an East Side Kids movie made by Ed Wood would like check out Spooks Run Wild. I say that as a good thing. A lot of Wood's movies were entertaining with good stories. It's in their execution that they fall short. This flick falls into the haunted house movie genre with the Kids bringing their own brand of slapstick humor to the proceedings. There are some pretty good visual gags in it. And overall it's a good lampoon of the horror film genre.

My favorite East Side Kids movie was Let's Get Tough (1942) in which the gang take on a group of Japanese spies. In Ghosts On The Loose they take on Nazi spies led by Lugosi. Not quite as much fun as Spooks Run Wild this one is also a haunted house mystery. But it's most famous for featuring Ava Gardner as the ingenue and a scene between Bela Lugosi and "Sunshine" Sammy Morrison in which Bela ad-libs a four letter word that director William "One-Shot" Beaudine saw no need to re-shoot.

THE MIGHTY TOR by Dave Goode

When I imagine an American-made masked wrestler movie in the early 1960s I think of Gordon Scott as the hero. Though he would probably demand to go without the mask for more than half the flick. Unlike the stars of the Mexiluchahero movie. Allison Hayes would be great in the type of roles that Lorena Velasquez played. Either a seductive villainess or damsel in distress. John Carradine would be the villain. And I would, of course, leave space for Tor Johnson to play the villain's hulking henchman.

6' 3" 387 lb. pro wrestler Tor Johnson (born Karl Tore Johansson) became a cult movie star playing hulking brutes in Ed Wood Jr. flicks BRIDE OF THE MONSTER (1955), PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959) and NIGHT OF THE GHOULS (1959).

Before that the massive Johnson who wrestled under the names the Super Swedish Angel and King Kong had appeared in movies usually in bit parts playing carnival/circus strongmen or wrestlers.

In the bio-flick ED WOOD (1994) Tor was portrayed by pro wrestling great George "The Animal" Steele.
The story goes that while wrestling in New York during the 70s, Steele saw Don Post's Tor Johnson Halloween mask in a Times Square novelty shop. He wanted to know who was exploiting his image and how he was going to get his cut.

Below you can find a Mr.Incognito comic by myself and Vance Capley so that you might get an idea what an American masked wrestler movie of the 60s might look like.
